Exploring the Role of Contemplative Practices in Teaching,Research, and Service for Sustainability
Our Storytelling Presenter is Julia Storberg-Walker, PhD., CHTP.
Julia’s storytelling will focus on two of the four dimensions of the Sustainability Mindset (emotional and spiritual intelligence), and she will make the argument that these two dimensions fundamentally generate the possibilities for the other two dimensions (ecoliteracy and systems perspective) to manifest fully. The argument will bring in ideas from the literature surrounding contemplative practices, wisdom traditions, mindfulness, and some basic neuroscience. A story will be shared that illuminates the current global shift away from separation and towards unity. This story will generate opportunities for discussion and sharing, and ideas for and questions about integrating contemplative practices into higher education curriculum will be offered.
Julia is an Associate Professor in the Department of Human and Organizational Learning, Graduate School of Education and Human Development, at The George Washington University (GW). Julia is an award-winning author, teacher, and researcher, and former editor-in-chief of Human Resource Development Review. As a researcher, Julia incorporates a variety of critically informed and action-oriented inquiry strategies in her work. She is an activist scholar inquiring into consciousness, justice, and peace. For example, she focuses on helping people see and understand how power--as embodied in Whiteness--shapes and controls what society values, expects, and takes for granted. Prior to coming to GW, Julia was inducted into North Carolina State University's Academy of Outstanding Faculty in Extension and Engagement. She has conducted action-oriented research and development in the United States, Jamaica, Belize, and India. Most recently, Julia has begun to explore spirituality and spiritual ways of knowing as epistemological grounds for environmental justice and planetary flourishing, and she is incorporating contemplative practices into her research, teaching, and service.
