"We will begin the session with brief discussions of Big Questions from the Flamekeepers, and then open it up for discussion.

·      How do our own preconceptions and biases (both positive and negative) influence our choice of research questions that we ask and the ways in which we ask them? Is there a dark side that we want to avoid falling in to, and, if so, how (what practices, teaching research methods, etc.) can we use to avoid being "seduced by the dark side". – Jerry Biberman

·      What research methodologies exist beyond the traditional quantitative and qualitative methods – research methods based on expanded levels of consciousness or "other ways of knowing"?  - Judi Neal

·      What practices or wisdom from spiritual and religious traditions could be useful to business students learning how to deal with real world organizational issues? – Richard Peregoy

·      Polarity is a serious force in the world. How can MSR research and theories help address this challenge and reduce the underlying suffering that leads to polarization? – Lee Robbins

Exploring the educative potential of inner consciousness:

Ethics and contemplation in higher education

Einstein said: "Intuition is a sacred gift and rationality is a faithful servant. Our society has it backwards we have honoured the servant and forgotten the gift." 

Inspired by Einstein's belief in the sublime nature of inner consciousness, we are conducting a study entitled Evaluating Contemplative Pedagogy in Postsecondary Ethics Education. This research aims to explore: a variety of contemplative practices based pedagogies; and to evaluate their contribution to transform students' self-concept and ethical behaviour. It intends to address the most pressing concerns of our time that is, our relationship with ourselves, one another, and the creatures of this planet. For this study, data will be collected from several universities located in Canada the US and India).

Please join our zoom session April 1, 2019 from 8 am till 10 am (PST), 11 am till 1pm (EST) to listen in and participate as three panelists, Professors Culham, Lin, and Chaturvedi discuss ideas on current and future research regarding ethics education, contemplative practices, concepts of self, and ways to measure ethics education effectiveness.

Panelist's Bios

Tom Culham, Professor, City University in Canada, has published books, book chapters, and journal articles that focus on spirituality, transformation, ethics in business and management. Tom has been involved in teaching and researching on the matte of business ethics incorporating contemplative practices since 2014.

Jing Lin, Professor, International Education Policy, University of Maryland has published several books, book chapters, and journal articles that focus on contemplative pedagogies, spiritual paradigm. She has also presented at national and international conferences and developed a course related to contemplative inquiry at the graduate level which has been taught for several years.

D.K. Chaturvedi, Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering Daylbagh Educational Institute (Deemed University) Dayalbagh Agra India, is the recipient of several prestigious awards. His research focuses on Human Consciousness, Soft Computing, Power and Energy Systems, Electrical Machines, Solar Energy, Modeling and Simulation of systems and he teaches Consciousness in engineering classes. His daily routine includes: 3 am spiritual practice gathering, then, 2 hours of community service work in agricultural fields, followed by teaching through the day and an evening spiritual practice gathering.

The theme of the MSR Research Consortium (- August 8th - pre-conference in Boston this year)  is qualitative research methods. The theme of Bob Quinn's presentation is connected to the Research Consortium theme: Qualitative Research Methods.
* Robert Quinn presented on the qualitative research methods he uses in his research.

* He holds the Margaret Elliot Tracey Collegiate Professorship at the University of Michigan and serves on the faculty of Organization and Management at the Ross Business School.
* He is a co-founders of the Center for Positive Organizations. Quinn's research and teaching interests focus on leadership, organizational change and effectiveness. * * He has published 18 books on these subjects.
* His best-selling book, Deep Change has sold over 100,000 copies.
* His book, The Best Teacher in You won the Ben Franklin Award designating it the best book in education for 2015.
* His latest book is The Positive Organization: Breaking Free of Conventional Cultures, Constraints and Beliefs.
* He is particularly known for his work on the competing values framework. It has been used by organizations across the globe and thousands of managers have been trained in the use of the Framework.
* He has thirty-five years of experience consulting with major corporations and government agencies.
* He is a fellow of the Academy of Management and the World Business Academy.

The MSR Research Conversation format supports the vibrancy of MSR's global research.  It is aimed to showcase relevant work and intended to spark rich and generative conversations related to important, impactful, relevant and rigorous research.

Report from Tom Culham, Representative at Large and Chair of MSR Research Team.

I chaired a Zoom session where 4 presenters discussed their research ideas and 5 people listened and participated.  The feedback from the session was that it was very helpful as people appreciated receiving positive and collegial feedback as well as hearing about the difficulties and struggles others are experiencing in the field. In addition, research ideas and references were exchanged. I think overall there is a need to provide a casual low stakes arena and supportive community for people conducting MSR research. It was proposed that these events should be held more often and we should use them to build on the work done during the August 9th MSR Research and Publishing Consortium in Chicago.

The process and agenda for the session is described below:

The session was designed to enable researchers to explore and develop their research ideas. Speakers can present an idea that is the early stages of development or they may have something that is well developed and would like to bounce it off like minded folks in the MSR community.

Or a participant may want to listen in to learn about research in the MSR field.

Submissions were submitted with a title and a one or two paragraph description of research ideas to Tom Culham by May 21st. Those wishing to listen and learn can let me know at my email  by May 28th.


During the zoom session presenter’s role is described below:

  1. Presenter Situation and Intention Statement 10 minutes
  • SITUATION: what is the situation/ problem /opportunity you want to address?
  • INTENTION: what do you want to create?
  • EDGE: what do you need to learn, develop, embrace to move this idea forward?
  • HELP: where do you need input and help?

Other participants in the session as listeners and presenters interact as follows:

  1. Listeners ask clarifying questions to understand presenter’s communication.
  • Presenter paraphrases questions and then responds.
