Dear friends and colleagues,
How do we navigate research ethics when studying spiritual and mystical phenomena? What happens when inquiry is deeply relational, emergent, transformative, emotionally intense, or does not fit neatly within conventional research norms?
We are delighted to highlight a very special workshop in the 2026 MSR Research Colloquium, "The Mystical and Research: Dwelling at the Threshold of Knowing."
In this AoM Ethics Education Committee workshop, Dr. Kathy Lund Dean will guide participants in exploring ethical questions that may arise in spiritually sensitive research contexts, including consent, vulnerability, trust, emotional intensity, anonymity, publication risk, and the ethical responsibilities of researchers.
This is a particularly meaningful session for the MSR community. Kathy is a founder of MSR, and a long-time contributor to the field. For this session, she will bring her Academy Ethics Education and Ethics Adjudication experience to share resources, best practices, and practical wisdom for researchers working at the edges of conventional inquiry. Participants are invited to come prepared for discussion and reflection, including their own research ethics questions and dilemmas.
