    Hi All

I got an email today asking me to be interviewed on an AM radio talk
    show about

    > or positive, according to your research. We're a call-in talk show and

What are the most common questions you get (other than the ones above)?
I'd like to be prepared when I get them.

    Don,

I have some experience with the media. As for questions, you can always ask for a list of questions prior to the interview. That is always appropriate.

The interviewer's questions will depend on the tact and agenda of the interviewer which may or may not be apparent depending if the agenda is hidden or open. If you can find out how the interviewer approaches the subject, (i.e. spirituality or religious, ACLU (no religious or spiritual expression in the classroom, etc. with potential negative connotations), that would help you to better prepare.

When I have done interviews, I tend to stick more to the values of spirituality than the God-aspect of spirituality, and the benefits which have been proven through science. Call me a chicken if you will, but most people are not ready to hear that spiritual values are really from Spirit. If the interviewer is onboard with the concepts and is accepting, then I might ask them a question about what is the basis for these values, and then open the discussion about the connection between values and Spirit.

I'll be around today if you want to talk more about this.

    Best,

    Drumm

I understand you teach a course on the subject and was wondering if you were available to join our discussion over the phone tomorrow around 9:15. We're a call-in talk show and would also be taking listener calls. The interview will probably last about 20 minutes.

I usually get questions about corporate scandals and business ethics, in
addition to the types of questions your interviewer listed.

This article gives an idea of questions I'm typically asked:

    Hi Don,

I'm on the list because I'm interested in the topic, but I don't teach a course on the subject and haven't been interviewed about it.  Offhand, I would expect questions about illegal bias in hiring and promoting people based upon membership in a religious group, and it would be good to bear in mind that in non-religious organizations, religion is normally an illegal selection criterion but one that may covertly affect decisions.  I would also think equal treatment for everyone regarding time used for prayers during normal work hours might be an issue.  The distinction between spirituality and active membership in an organized religion might be mentioned.

You have my best wishes dealing with what I'm sure will be an interesting set of questions.

    Hi Don,

Some of the questions I typically get are:

    1.  What is spirituality and what is religion - and what are the similarities and differences?
    2.  Is spirituality in the workplace a growing trend?  If so, what is the evidence?
    3.  What role, if any, did September 11th play in this trend?
    4.  Can you give us examples of organizations that are practicing spirituality in the workplace?  (You can find a list of 31 organizations from 11 countries who have received the International Spirit at Work award on our website at http://www.spiritatwork.org/awards/willisharman/honorees.htm.  Some of these have short case studies posted).
    5.  If someone wanted to get started with implementing spirituality in the workplace, what are some simple things they could do to begin?
    6.  If the employer does not support spirituality in the workplace, but an individual wanted to express their own spirituality, how can they go about doing that?
    7.  What are the positive effects, including positive business outcomes, of spirituality in the workplace, i.e., does spirituality lead to productivity?
    8.  What things should managers be wary of in implementing spirituality in the workplace?
    9.  Are there possible negative effects of spirituality in the workplace?
    10.  What are some resources where people can find out more about spirituality in the workplace (If they ask this, I hope you will mention the Association for Spirit at Work, www.spiritatwork.org)

A good resource is DiversityInc.com and print edition DiversityInc which had an issue recently on religion in the workplace that was quite comprehensive. Good overviews with policy examples from many organizations.

My employer, a large corporation, includes religious groups among our corporate diversity council employee resource groups. And we have a prayer room at our headquarters and religious holiday observances hosted by the employee groups. Our experience with inclusiveness has been positive. Other companies with enlightened policies choose to avoid religion entirely.

    Best wishes on the interview.

Judi...thanks for this posting.  This may be a little self-serving but I would like to hear your (and others) answers to these thought-provoking questions.
