Special Issue of Journal of Management Spirituality and Religion:
The Psychology and Sociology of Religion and Spirituality in
Organizational Life
The literature in religious and spiritual psychology (RSP) and
sociology of religion (SOR) have received only limited
attention from scholars in workplace spirituality and
religion. But the scientifically-based RSP/SOR literature
could provide workplace spirituality scholarship with a host
of theory, measures, and foci that would help to expand the
domain of workplace spirituality. The special issue will
attempt to capture thinking of RSP/SOR research and theory in
an attempt to draw on its utility for workplace spirituality
scholarship. It is designed to provide a stimulus for future
empirical investigations and theoretical developments.
The special issue is being called to provide a forum that will
introduce the viability of ideas from RSP/SOR in helping to
explain the workplace spirituality phenomenon that continues
to grow, both in terms of research and practice. The objective
of the special issue will be to bring together an issue that:
1. Applies theory from RSP/SOR toward an understanding of
workplace spirituality,
2. Provides empirical work that tests RSP/SOR theory and
measures within the context of organizational life,
3. Advances distinctions between individual level, group
level, and organization level understanding of workplace
spirituality,
4. Uses the RSP/SOR research domain to explain and/or explore
traditional organizational topics such as (but not limited to)
workplace motivation, employee recruitment and selection, job
satisfaction, organizational culture, organizational politics
and power, business ethics and social responsibility, and
workplace well-being.
All aspects of RSP/SOR will be considered relevant for the
special issue. Novel applications of the RSP/SOR literature to
workplace spirituality are particularly welcome.
Short proposals (no more than 200 words) outlining the
authors' plan for a paper should be sent by May 1, 2009 to
Mathew Sheep if the paper is focused on empirical or
theoretical contributions and to David Trott, if the paper is
focused on educational or practice issues. Successful
proposals will be asked in June 2009 to submit a full
manuscript (25 double-spaced pages), to be received by
December 1, 2009. All submissions will be peer reviewed. For

"So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they are busy doing things they think are important. This is because they are chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to the community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning." Tuesdays with Morrie, Mitch Albom
