Hi Charles,
Thanks so much for sharing your exciting plans for your program with us and for seeking my views.
I love your ideas - very current and useful I think. I particularly like your emphasis on holistic approaches. Something my colleague, John Rayment and I have been struggling with for some time though is exactly what this holistic approach looks like. We have been developing a framework for this to try and describe this in more detail. I have attached a paper about it which we have recently submitted to an academic journal.
We have also been exploring why often leaders do not lead effectively. We argue a lot of this is due to upbringing, socialisation and education and this I think might be important in your programme to help delegates understand some of the presures and influences they experience that shapes their thinking on leadership. We have entitled the poor leadership as MisLeadership and we have just written a book about this. Attached some details of that for your information.
We are also part of an important global Initiative called the Globally Responsible Leadership Initaitive. Their web site at www.grli.org may offer you some useful resources as you encourage your delegates to consider the wider global issues in leadership.
Hope that in some way assists you in your wonderful work - well done.
Warmest regards,
Jon

Subject: New Liberal Arts Program with Leadership Concentration
I am redesigning JFKU's B.A. in Liberal Arts program, with concentrations in leadership and communication, and wanted to be sure that the new program will not only be of high academic quality but will also enable students to get good jobs. The program will be holistic, transformative, and integrative and have a global orientation and practical dimension. I was wondering whether anyone would be able to give me feedback on the viability of the program for today's workforce. If so, please contact me at cburack@jfku.edu. A preliminary description of the program is below.
Thanks,
Chuck

The B.A. in Global Liberal Arts program is designed for prepare students to live and work creatively, responsibly, and sustainably in a dynamic global society. Students gain global perspectives on the major disciplines within the social sciences and humanities, and they learn to analyze, integrate, and apply this knowledge to academic questions, social problems, and occupational challenges. Issues, persons, populations, events, trends, and artifacts are examined in their historical and cultural contexts. Students also learn to make creative connections across disciplines and, more broadly, to think and act in innovative ways. This powerful blend of knowledge, skills, and experiences is highly valued in today's global workforce and will help our students thrive in a fast-changing world.
The program strengthens critical, creative, and integrative thinking by employing a holistic and transformative approach to education. This dynamic approach focuses on educating the whole person-body, mind, heart, and spirit-and on understanding individuals in relation to their families, communities, societies, and ecospheres. To accomplish this, a variety of pedagogies are used: lecture, class discussion, small group conversation, pairs dialogue, experiential exercises, service learning, field study, contemplative exercises, debates, creative projects, and collaborative social projects. This transformative approach facilitates self-awareness, deepens understanding and appreciation of diversity, and strengthens commitment to ethical, ecological, and socially responsible action.
The program offers optional concentrations in Leadership and Communication as well as linking options to graduate study in business, counseling, holistic health, and sports psychology. Linking accelerates completion of undergraduate study: it means that when students finish their required Global Liberal Arts (GLA) courses, they can apply to graduate programs, and if accepted, they can use their graduate courses to complete the last 18-24 electives of the GLA program.
