2008 AMLE Writers Workshop
AMLE conducted a highly successful workshop for prospective writers at the 2007 Academy meetings. Based on the popularity of last years workshop, we will be offering this workshop again during the 2008 Academy meetings. The workshop will be conducted Sunday, August 10, 10am - noon. The workshop will: (1) begin with a brief overview (e.g., 10 minutes) of the journal and its current emphases and direction, and (2) small group discussions of selected research proposals of workshop participants. Thus, the workshop will be primarily devoted to receiving specific feedback on proposals submitted by respective participants in advance of the workshop. As such, only participants with proposals selected in advance of the workshop will be invited to attend. The proposals should be brief (i.e., 5-10 double-spaced pages of text). Ideally, they should reflect research in the formative stage. Thus, prospective authors should outline a research concept, why the concept is important, specific research questions or hypotheses, and proposed methodology. Alternatively, proposals could represent research in more advanced stages, or research for which data have already been collected. Proposals will be due to the AMLE office (amle@gwu.edu) or to incoming Editor J. B. Arbaugh (arbaugh@uwosh.edu) by June 2, 2008, and notification of acceptance will occur on or before July 1, 2008. While proposals for manuscripts for AMLEs Essays, Dialogues, and Interviews section will be considered, the workshops primary focus is for proposals intended to develop manuscripts for submissions to the Research and Reviews section of the journal. Please note that accepted proposals and authors will not be listed in the Academy program.
During the workshop, participants will get feedback in 3-person groups, each facilitated by one of the panel experts -- an associate editor, or someone from the editorial board. For each person in a respective group, 30 or so minutes of the session will be devoted to receiving feedback from the other two or three participants, as well as the facilitator. We expect that the final 10-15 minutes will be spent conducting a wrap-up discussion involving all participants. It should be noted that participation in the workshop does not guarantee subsequent publication, but it should help along that path.
