  • 1.  POSSIBLE CORRELATIONAL RESEARCH METHODS

    Posted 05-13-2008 14:24
Hello all, I am currently working on a correlational research method for my dissertation topic: Spirituality in the Workplace: The impact on Work productivity, job satisfaction and ethical behavior among union employees.

I have run into a problem with my chair, in regards to having a more predictive research method. Any thoughts or ideas.

I am using the following surveys: SWBS to measure spirituality, Endicott Work Productivity Scale to measure work productivity, Job Descriptive Index/Job In General to measure job satisfaction and Survey of Work Values - Revised to measure ethical behavior.

The population sample will be pulled from 13 district local union chapters.

The feedback that I have received thus far, basically states that my research method may find that their is a relationship but will not be value-added. So I am back to the drawing board, and would like to get thoughts on other possible research methods that may be viable in my research.

Any thoughts or direction from others, would be greatly appreciated.

    Tacha,

I wonder  what your chair means by predictive research.  I assume you are putting forward hypotheses and using  data to test thm.  Well.. that is predictive.  Value-added:  have earlier studies looked at the combination of independent variables that you are studying?  If they haven't then your study is adding value.  Have union workers been studied?  If not, your study is adding value.  That bring to mind the question whether we would expect the relationship(s) to be different for unionized workers.  I assume you started looking at union members precisely because you expect something different.

By the way, what is the SWBS spirituality measure?  Any references you can pass on to this group?

    Cheers,

    Subba

    Dear Tacha,

I'll mention what I did in my doctoral research in the same area, hoping that it may help you in some way.Mine was a predictive study. Title of the thesis was 'Spiritual Climate of Business Organization and Its Impact on Customers' Experience of Employees' Service'.
I conceptualized workplace spirituality as climatic variable. That was independent variable in the study. Dependent variable was customers' experience of employees' service. I found a positive relation between them. As part of thesis I developed and validated the Spiritual Climate Scale. Variable in the scale are meaningfulness of the work, sense of community, autheticity, concern for social and natural environment, and meditative work.

    loving regards,
    Ashish
