CJBE Call for Papers

• 1. CJBE Call for Papers

Posted 11-14-2008 12:09

Greetings,

The purpose of this note is to ask that the Call for Papers that I'm pasted below be sent to our MSR membership. I believe we made a similar posting last year, and I personally hope to afford the opportunity to participate in this conference to as broad an audience as possible. Please take a look and call/email to discuss how I might get this out. This is a first for me, and I appreciate your patience and help.

Many thanks. Emmett (913 620 0597)

PS. I also look forward to also discussing the upcoming MSR Doctoral Student and New Faculty Consortium (AOM 2009) as well as I will be looking for help in posting notices (I am assisting as Program Co-Chari)

Call for Papers
"Leading Others and Developing Leaders for Business in the 21st Century"

12th Annual
Colleagues in Jesuit Business Education (CJBE) Conference
Hosted by
Rockhurst University, Kansas City, Missouri
July 16-19, 2009

Purpose of the Conference:
The 2009 conference at Rockhurst seeks to further the CJBE mission to:

• Promote cooperation and excellence among Jesuit Business faculty
• Deepen exploration of the distinctiveness of Jesuit Business education
• Orient new faculty to the Ignatian tradition and Jesuit education
• Foster networking among faculty in the various business disciplines

In addition to presenting research papers and presentations focused on pedagogical innovations, and sharing institutional best practices, we will incorporate substantial time for conversation among participants throughout the conference. The forum for these conversations will be "Roundtables." We encourage submissions of "Roundtable" proposals similarly focused around our conference themes and also topics of a more general nature. These three tiers have been intentionally developed as a way to extend our conversation and encourage broad participation. Finally, we will host an alumni event for Jesuit College and Universities graduates now living in the Kansas City (See program for Friday below).

Conference Theme and Structure:
The theme centers on the practice of leadership and the development of leaders in the Jesuit tradition. On the opening day of the conference (Thursday) we will discuss the foundation that distinguishes leading in the Jesuit tradition. The theme for the second day is on the practice of leadership in ways that reflect Jesuit traditions. Alumni from our Jesuit institutions will be invited to participate in a special reception and presentation on the theme of leading in the Jesuit tradition on Friday evening. On Saturday the focus is on the development of the next generation of business leaders through the programs we offer our students.

Conference Submissions:
We invite papers, presentations, and Rountable proposals on research, teaching, and best practices for leader development centered on any of the three central components of the conference (see just below). The following illustrations are intended to spark possible topics around these three components and are not intended to be restrictive.

Paper and Presentation Proposals. Submissions for either a paper or presentation are encouraged around the central areas just described. Papers reflect traditional conference submissions while proposals might also be to provide a presentation around a topic of interest. Accepted papers must also be presented but proposals for presentations do incur only the requirement to provide a copy of the presentation. Both are double-blind peer reviewed (e.g. outline or slideshow). Proposals accepted as paper or presentation follow guidelines referred to below.

Roundtable Proposals.
Time will be allotted to roundtable discussion with focus in areas especially corresponding to the second and third areas above. Roundtable discussions are distinct from paper and presentations in that they are not blind reviewed and are less structured. For example, during one period of roundtable discussion, issues centered on the practice of leading in the Jesuit tradition will be discussed. Participants will be able to select a roundtable based on the topics being discussed, but those interested in taking a more active role in organizing a roundtable around a particular discipline or interest area are encouraged to submit a proposal.

Submissions.
All submissions will be reviewed for quality and fit with the conference theme and/or the more general CJBE mission. Papers and presentations will receive double-blind review. Submission proposal deadline for papers, presentations, and Roundtable discussions is February 28, 2009. Authors will be notified of acceptance by April 31, 2009. All papers, presentations, and Roundtable submissions must be provided in final form by June 22, 2009. See below for additional guidance to develop proposals as well guidance for final submissions.

Reviewers needed.
Assistance with the review process is much appreciated and needed. Please contact our Program Chair to volunteer. Please provide areas of interest and area(s) of expertise.

CJBE 2009 Paper, Presentation and Roundtable Submission Guidelines

Intent. The intent of papers, presentations, and Roundtables is to advance our conversation around conference themes and to raise important questions for the community.

Submission Alternatives. There are three types of submissions: papers, presentations and Roundtables. Each reflects tiers of effort and states of refinement that will be expected in the final submission-if accepted.

• Papers. Papers follow the traditional requirements and undergo the most rigorous review. Papers should be complete works worthy of publication. In addition to the accepted paper getting published in the Conference Proceedings, authors must present their work at the conference.
• Presentations. A second method is to develop a presentation for the conference. Presentations do not include a requirement to prepare a paper. Presentations may reflect a distillation of previous work that is relevant to the conference, or explore new territory centered around the conference theme.
• Roundtables. The third type of submission is a proposal for Roundtable presentation. Roundtable submissions are intended primarily to further the conversation around the conference themes. They also provide an opportunity to engage in conversation around topics of more general interest to CJBE attendees. Conference roundtables will be organized around discipline, and interest areas depending on submissions received.

Proposal Submission Guidelines. Proposals for papers, presentations, and Roundtables are to follow the following guidelines. Paper and presentation submission will be blind peer reviewed and evaluated based on general support for the themes of the conference. Roundtables are evaluated based on more general criteria-generally, support for the CJBE mission.

Proposal Structure:

• Names and contact information:
• Title:
• Theme:
• Synopsis:
• Outcomes: Summarize what you would like to achieve through the presentation or Roundtable.

Other Guidelines:

• Proposals should not exceed 3 double-spaced pages, Times New Roman, 12 font.
• All proposals are evaluated based on general support for the themes of the conference.
• A limited number of proposals based on themes NOT included in the conference may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
• Evaluation Criteria for Papers and Presentations. The primary criteria for evaluation of proposals for papers and presentations include fit within conference theme, quality of work, relevance of the questions raised, and likely interest to conference attendees.
• Evaluation of Roundtable. Proposals for Roundtables are not blind reviewed but are evaluated based on general support for the themes of the conference as well as interest of attendees and general mission and objectives of CJBE.
• Invited papers and presentations will not be subject to double-blind review process and to the extent possible, will be included in the conference proceedings.
• Proposal submissions are due by 28th February 2009. Notice of acceptance/rejection will be 30th April.

Final Submission Guidelines. The following guidelines are applicable for those submissions that are accepted for inclusion at the conference.

Paper Guidelines.

• Final submission should be a maximum of 15 double-spaced pages of text, with no more than 5 additional pages of tables, figures, references and appendices.
• Manuscripts should be submitted as a Microsoft Word or Rich Text Format file. All text in the manuscript should be double spaced, with a 1 inch margin on all four sides. The paper size should be set to 'Letter' (8.5 inches X 11 inches). Manuscripts should be prepared in Times New Roman Font, Font size 12.
• Accepted papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings and distributed to attendees at the conference.
• Final versions are due by June 22nd, 2009.

Presentation Guidelines.

• Presentation title.
• Continuing the conversation. Each presentation is intended to include intentional opportunity to engage with participants. Speakers should seek to be intentionally prepared to facilitate a conversation rather than simply responding to questions.
• Length. Anticipated presentation length (program constraints likely restrict presentations to 30 minutes).
• Proposals are to be submitted as a Microsoft PowerPoint files. Including the speaker's comments within PowerPoint "Note Pages" would be appreciated.
• Final versions are due by June 22d, 2009.

Roundtable Guidelines.

• Title.
• Names and contact information.
• Description. Short description of what you will present at the Roundtable.
• Evaluation. Roundtable submissions are not peer reviewed but are evaluated for overall "fit" for the conference.
• If Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) focused, clarify activities you envision if applicable.
• Submissions should be submitted as a Microsoft Word, or Microsoft PowerPoint files.
