Hi everyone-
Some of you emailed me that the attachment with the call for dissertation award submissions did not come through, so I am putting the text into the body of this email. It's long so I apologize for that. But, please note that the deadline for submissions to the formal program is January 15th, 2009 and dissertations to be considered for awards must be submitted in some form to the formal program.
Thank you!
CALL FOR PAPERS for
"MOST PROMISING DISSERTATION AWARD"
DEADLINE – 15 JANUARY 2009, 5:00 PM (EST)
Management, Spirituality and Religion (MSR) announces the availability of up to three Most Promising Dissertation Awards available to doctoral candidates approaching completion of comprehensive exams, beginning the formulation of dissertation proposals, and/or conducting their actual doctoral research.
Purpose: MSR is a young and emergent domain for scholarship within the Academy of Management. Therefore, MSR seeks to encourage quality doctoral dissertations as a springboard to continuing contributory research. Most Promising Dissertation Awards will provide doctoral candidates with assistance by:
- Acknowledging the value of an intended, in process, or completed dissertation that has been competitively reviewed and nominated as promising by an international panel of scholars.
- Helping a doctoral candidate to establish contact with researchers within MSR who share an interest, experiences, and who can assist with further coaching if called upon.
- Providing an opportunity (at the MSR Professional Development Workshop within the Annual Academy of Management Conference) to interact with a panel of scholars and other doctoral candidates to refine theoretical and methodological foundations and to explore action implications that can be highlighted in the research.
- Recognize their efforts with a modest financial award.
Submission Requirements: Though this is a submission for a "dissertation award," the dissertation need not be completed in order to apply. It may reflect preliminary conceptualization of the research question(s) and initial research design and include literature review. If the dissertation is completed or nearly so, the 15-20 pages will include more extended discussion of findings/results. (Even if you have defended the dissertation but HAVE NOT YET GRADUATED as of the submission date of 15 January 2009, you are still eligible to submit/apply.) No preference to completed dissertations will be given. Each submission must demonstrate relevance to the MSR domain, links to interesting theoretical concerns, preliminary methodological approaches, and connection to managerial actions. Submissions should generally align with the MSR domain statement:
"The study of the relationship and relevance of spirituality and religion in management and organizations. Major topics include: theoretical advances or empirical evidence about the effectiveness of spiritual or religious principles and practices in management, from approaches represented in the literature including religious ethics, spirituality and work, and spiritual leadership, as well as applications of particular religions, and secular spiritualities to work, management/leadership, organization, and the business system; and evaluation studies of the effectiveness of management approaches that nurture the human spirit in private, non-public or public institutions."
**SPECIAL NOTE** Important Changes from Last Year:
1. All submissions for 2009 take the form of a full paper and must be submitted through the AOM process-hence the AOM deadline must be followed, 15th January 2009.
2. A parallel submission is required (see details below).
3. The time available for the Doctoral Student and New Faculty Consortium has been shortened. The implication and schedule will be reflected in a later notice which will be sent out in January/February 2009.
Submission Deadline: An electronic copy of paper-minimum, 15 pages, maximum 40 pages-with accompanying abstract must be submitted through the online AOM submission process AND to the MSR Paper Review Committee Chair, Freda Turner, fturner@ncu.edu. Submission to BOTH is 15th January, 2009, 5:00PM (EST). Notification of awards granted will be made approximately 2 months before the conference in order to allow recipients to make their travel plans to attend the Academy of Management in Chicago. For guidelines for the AOM submission go to, http://submission.aomonline.org/2009/.
Expectations of Award Recipients:
- Attend the Awards Dinner and Reception for the MSR Doctoral Student Consortium [FRIDAY OR SATURDAY] evening of the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management for Most Promising Dissertation Awards recipients the year the award is received.
- Make a presentation during this year's MSR Professional Development Workshop (PDW) summarizing the paper (contact workshop coordinator is Arthur L Jue, PhD at ajue@sbcglobal.net for details).
- Submit a copy of completed dissertation to MSR Chair, Kathy Lund Dean, PhD at lundkath@cob.isu.edu when the thesis is concluded.
ALL Applicants: ALL doctoral students making a paper submission are encouraged to attend the MSR Doctoral Student and New Faculty Consortium. One segment of the program will be dedicated to discussion of submissions-including those not selected for an award. Any applicant that would like to participate in a discussion of their research is extended this invitation. Projects that are at an early stage of development-or recently completed dissertations-may be informally presented as a way to receive feedback or suggestions for further development. In the case of a recently completed dissertation, discussion of publication opportunities may be helpful. Applicants will be advised of the method(s) that will be used as the conference approaches.
Further Questions: The MSR Doctoral Student and New Faculty Consortium is being coordinated by three individuals. For questions centered on the submission of a paper, please contact Freda Turner, PhD, fturner@ncu.edu. For general information or questions regarding the program which is being developed, please contact either Adela, McMurray, PhD, adela.mcmurray@rmit.edu.au or, Emmett Perry, PhD, emmett.perry@rockhurst.edu.
