I am looking for a survey instrument that measures an organizations spirituality (from the perspective of the organization). Can anyone help me with this?

Note: I am currently working on my dissertation. I am doing a quantitative correlational study of the level of commitment an employee has to an organization compared to the level of spirituality of the organization.

    I thank you in advance.

    Hello Ann,

I have developed the Spirit at Work Scale (SAWS) and have used it to demonstrate a correlation between spirit at work and organizational commitment among other things (e.g., teamwork, morale, job satisfaction). The SAWS is directed to the employee and his or her experience of spirit at work (engaging work, sense of community, spiriutal connection and mystical experience). I am not sure if this meets your criteria for organizational spirituality, but contact me directly and we can discuss it.

Thank you for doing this important research.

Check our organizational spiritual leadership model and survey ( See http://www.tarleton.edu/~fry/SLTSpIssueArmy.pdf and http://www.tarleton.edu/~fry/SLTPalgraveFINAL.pdf)  . One of the model's outcome variables is organizational commitment.

    Hi Everyone,

One of my students is working on a master's thesis in the field of SAW.
For this he needs to gain insight in the quantitative research which has
been conducted in this field. Could you please help him with the
    following questions:

    - What do you consider the most important research/articles?
    - Which research is most often quoted?
    - Where to find an overview of recent work in this field?

    Dear Eric,
Among the many resources you will find, I offer my own book that has
extensive quantitative and qualitative research on what I call the "faith at
work movement," which includes both religion and spirituality. The name of
the book is, "God at Work: The History and Promise of the Faith at Work
    Movement" (Oxford University Press, 2007).

"God at Work" focuses largely on the United States, chronicling what I
identify as three major waves of faith and work activity over the past 100
years. That said, the chapters dealing with the historical roots of the
movement, draw heavily on some of the European influences. Among other
things, I make the case that this is a bona fide social movement, and not
just a passing fad or fancy.

    With kind regards,
    Erik de Jongh

    Erik,

You might want to take a look at the Journal of Management Spirituality and Religion, the major publishing outlet for MSR-type research. Also, take a look at our Handbook of Workplace Spirituality and Organizational Performance, which covers a great deal of research in the area.

    Best regards,

    Bob

    Dear Erik,

You've received good suggestions from David Miller and Robert Giacalone. In
fact, I wrote a review of David's book in the MSR Journal (Vol 5, Issue 1).
In my opinion from a U.S. perspective, Mitroff and Denton's A Spiritual
Audit of Corporate America is the most often cited work as it helped trigger
additional quantitative and qualitative research. An interesting 10 years
later article appeared in the MSR Journal Volume 6, Issue 1. The MSR
Journal and Giacalone are probably the richest sources of quantitative data.
Two other books I recommend are:

Hicks, D. A. (2003). Religion and the workplace: Pluralism, spirituality,
leadership. Cambridge, UK: The Press Syndicate of the University of
    Cambridge.

Williams, O. F. (Ed.). (2003). Business, religion, and spirituality: A new
synthesis. Notre Dame, IN: University of Notre Dame Press.

One other source of early research are symposia:
Dr. Thierry Pauchant of HEC in Montreal held one early in the new century a
report of its findings can be found in:
Pauchant, T. C. (Ed.). (2002). Ethics and spirituality at work: Hopes and
pitfalls of the search for meaning in organizations. Westport, CT: Quorum
    Books.

Another important source is the 2001 Bridging the Gap conference that Dr.
Andre Delbecq (another important scholar in this movement) orchestrated at
Santa Clara University. These papers do a good job of exploring definitions
of spirituality and work. Here is the URL:
    http://business.scu.edu/spirituality_leadership/

    I hope this helps.
