    Hi Again,

David Steingard's question about an OB textbook got me to thinking about a course I am planning next semester on "Faith and Spirituality in the Workplace."  I have been polling students, business leaders and faith leaders in my area (Northwest Arkansas) about what the new Tyson Center for Faith and Spirituality in the Workplace might do to serve them.  I also polled people in MSR when we were in Chicago for the Academy. The students and other stakeholders in Northwest Arkansas are interested in learning about what the different religious traditions have to contribute to the field of management.  They are interested in faith and spirituality as a diversity issue.

I'm wondering how many of you in MSR are teaching MSR type courses from this diversity perspective, and how many teach from a more generic perspective that does not delve specifically into different faith traditions.

    And I have two requests:

    1.        Do you have any recommendations of texts that cover what different faith traditions have to offer management, leadership, change management, and/or social responsibility?

    2.       I am creating a website for the Center and will be posting syllabi for MSR courses that will be publicly available.  Do you have a syllabus you would be willing to share with our larger community?

    Thanks so much!

    Warm Regards,

    Hi Judy,

I've found "The Gods of Business: the intersection of faith and the marketplace" to be an insightful interfaith supplement. Regarding diversity, it highlights commonalities across faith traditions.

    Best wishes,

One book I have used in a course entitled, "Theology and Spirituality of Work" is Jay Conger's
Spirit at Work: Discovering the Spirituality in Leadership (Jossey Bass Business and Management Series).  I believe it would be suitable for a religiously diverse audience.

I think the the type of book you use will depend on the course you teach and the department that you teach in. Management courses are premised on the scientific method and the kinds of books used are going to be different from those that you'd use if you are teaching a theology or philosophy course on the topic. The field, in management at least, is moving away from the approach that doesn't rely on the scientific method. As far as I know, there are no texts focusing exclusively on spirituality and religion that take a scientific approach to the subject.
