Greetings All,
I will be attending the Academy of Management meetings in Montreal in August. I want to take this opportunity to extend an invitation to you - to attend a Professional Development Workshop (PDW) on August 6th (1pm – 5pm) and sponsored by ODC and MSR. Awakening the Dreamer: Sustainability, Social Justice and Healthy Spirit at Humanity's Crossroads.
Within the study and practice of MSR and OD it has been the aesthetic and mind/body/spirit process that open us to strategic and artful learning that has been core to my interests and investigations. Last year at the academy I attended a very short caucus session that introduced the "Awakening the Dreamer" workshop . The room was packed and in that brief time together it seemed that those attending that caucus were very excited to experience this introduction. I returned to my small place in the world – S.E. Ohio – Appalachia. And in less than a year I was able to attend 2 "Awakening the Dreamer" symposiums in my own small university town of Athens, Ohio ( a first in this region). In early May completed a facilitators training for the Awakening the Dreamer Symposium – again in training was in Athens. The workshop described below is filled with attention to the spirit and art - of engagement - for transformational collaborative work in the world - the spirit and aesthetics of strategic learning - for and about renewing caring now – and for future. Read the description let me know if you have questions, ideas and if you can join me for this afternoon event on Aug. 6th. I saw this on the AoM conference program and was delighted that MSR and OD are co-sponsors. I asked the coordinator, Kit Tennis, if I would help in anyway. Letting people know is one way I can support this work. It would be great to see you there. I would love to learn from your interest in MSR and your experience of the workshop. If you can't attend but are at the conference I hope your time in Montreal is fantastic.
For those who will not be at the conference – I hope you will review the website URL in the description below and let me know if you would like to be involved in any way. This is a workshop or symposium that is happening all over the world and is all volunteers - all free - to all people – all communities...etc.
I hope you have a great summer.
Mary

Awakening the Dreamer: Sustainability, Social Justice and Healthy Spirit at Humanity's Crossroads
Friday, Aug 6, 2010 1:00PM - 5:00PM at Le Centre Sheraton in Salon 6
Our world is at a crossroads where our societal vision, organizational systems, lifestyles, daily personal choices and even our physical survival are being called into question. At this intersection, environmental sustainability, healthy human spirit and social justice meet in powerful interconnection. In this time of flux, management academics and practitioners have extraordinary potential to facilitate the changes our society so badly needs in order to reach our individual and collective potential. This PDW presents a highly sophisticated group experience that is reaching tens of thousands of people around the world, generating enormous hope and inspiration to transform our world in our lifetimes. This workshop is based on the Awakening the Dreamer Symposium, a highly experiential, multimedia event that provides an ideal, free resource for Academy members who want to bring passion into the climate change discussion. It is being integrated into academic programs around the world.
The program intersperses carefully structured group activities with 80 minutes of exquisitely crafted high impact video to engage participants in exploring four questions:
1) Where are we? - What is the state of our world with respect to the intensely interrelated issues of environmental sustainability, social justice, and healthy human spirit?
2) How did we get here? - What are the mental models we've operated under that led us to get ourselves into this situation?
3) What is possible? - Looking at the enormous social changes of the past two centuries and the unprecedented groundswell of millions of positive initiatives across the globe, what can we imagine is possible for our future?
4) Where do we go from here? - What is each of us called to do to make a difference? - A completely non-prescriptive charge to act in small and large ways, through our individual motives, skills and energy, to change the world for the better.
This program is non-religious, non-sectarian, and apolitical. Refined continuously over the past six years by volunteer facilitators on five continents, it continues to be upgraded, particularly for audiences outside the U.S. This symposium is enormously successful at generating optimism and commitment to the possibilities for a green and just future.
