| The Role of Human Values in Sustainability: A Curriculum Challenge for Business Schools Scheduled: Sunday, Aug 8 2010 2:20PM - 5:20PM at Le Palais Des Congres in 518A This workshop is based on the conviction that true sustainability can only be achieved when the choices made to achieve it are driven by values that focus on doing what is right. For managers who are often pulled in different directions because of the pressures to meet the expectations of Wall Street, this represents a difficult choice. While the academic and popular literature has rightfully drawn attention to the need to pay more attention to social and environmental outcomes, the justification used is invariably defined in economic terms-the business case. We take the position that even while economic outcomes are important, they are not the sole and defining justification for sustainability. We are deeply concerned about those situations where the business case is not obvious. We argue that these cases represent the real challenges for managers and we need to focus on developing the capabilities of current and future managers to raise the difficult questions and develop innovative solution to the dilemmas that sustainability presents. Through this workshop we plan to raise these critical issues and work with other academicians and practitioners to gain better insights and develop action plans for the future. We look forward to seeing you there... Gerard | | |
