My name is Emily Lean and I am with the University of Arkansas. I am
collecting data for my dissertation on the behaviors of spiritual
leaders. My hope is to create a reliable measure of spiritual leadership
that may help promote the development of the workplace spirituality
    literature.
My data collection is divided into two phases. In the first phase, I
will interview subject matter experts in order to get their suggestions as
to which behaviors are indicative of a spiritual leader. In the second
phase, the created list of behaviors will be administered to a large
sample of academics and practitioners. I am looking for participants for
the first phase of this data collection. Should you choose to
participate, we can set up a time to conduct a phone interview at your
convenience. During this conversation, I will ask you a few questions on
your opinion of what constitutes spiritual leadership and which behaviors
you feel are unique to a spiritual leader. The interviews generally last
    from 12 to 15 minutes.
If you would like to participate, please e-mail me at elean@uu.edu and
let me know of your interest. We can then set up a time and date for the
    phone interview.
If you are not interested but know someone who may be, please feel free
to forward this on to them. I look forward to your response.

    Sincerely,
    Emily Lean

     Hi Emily,
I am note sure how you are defining a "spiritual leader".  Let me know if I am included in your definition.
I am the College of Business and Economics Senate Chair, the University of Hawaii at Hilo Faculty Congress Chair, and the University of Hawaii All Campus Council of Faculty Senate Chairs Co-Chair. I was in the first cohort of our President's Emerging Leadership Program at the University of Hawaii, and I particpate in college-wide, campus-wide and system-wide policy committees.

I consider myself a spiritual leader because I practice meditation daily and hold a group meditation at my home every Sunday with around 25 people. My husband and I have founded a 20 acre retreat center for contempletive, small (up to 20 members) groups that seek to be surrounded by silence and nature. We live very close to Kilauea Volcano and the ocean and do not get TV, cell phones or high speed internet where we live. We are growing our own food (trying!) and catch our own water. When I am at work, I do not discuss my spiritual beliefs but I try to live up to my own standards of "right thought, right action, right behavior". I seek to assist my institution to be the "best" (for all) that it can be. I seek to be guided by my own inner knowing and sense of rightousness.

I am sure that everyone on this listserv can describe themself in a similar way, so in that sense we are all "spiritual leaders". Let me know if you want to talk.

    Best wishes and blessings,

    Emily,

I would be happy to help, and think it would be useful if you let us know something about what YOU mean by "spiritual leaders", as this could mean many different things.  You might mean leaders influenced by spiritual beliefs or practice, or leaders of spiritual organizations.  Personally, I don't think that hearing a variety of views on the term would be very useful, since there is considerable literature on this topic.  For a dissertation, I'd like to know that you appreciate the distinctions in the literature and preceding research and are taking this further, in some way, and share this in providing the context for the research.

    Best wishes!

    Dr. Schuyler,
I appreciate your inquiry.  I am interested in leaders who are influenced by spiritual beliefs or practices but I don't want to say more than that because I specifically want to find out how you would define a spiritual leader, which behaviors you think are unique to spiritual leaders, and your opinion on a brief list of behaviors that I have gleaned from the literature.  The results of everyone's interviews will be compiled and refined for my second round of data collection.  This seems like a lot but most of the interviews are around 15 minutes.    Please let me know if this something you might be interested in.

    Thanks,

    dear Emily,

with reference to your request, you may want to know about servant-leadership and its spiritual dimension. Servant-leadership is a leadership principle embedded in a way of life.  Driven by the spirit and motivation of enabling others to work more effectively and be successful. Servant-leadership means leading and inspiring a group or organisation in the service of people, be the clients, customers, employees, partners, colleagues and/or members of your network.  Integrating both head and heart, servant-leadership does not stop there. It expands as a spiritual principle to serve the community and act a steward of the environment.

If you wish, you can book me in for the telephone interview. To introduce you and our MSR colleagues to our current work on servant-leadership, please find enclosed an invitation for the Servant-leadership symposium at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam on November 22th 2010.  We have found international experts from different generations willing to present their sparkling insights about meeting the higher education needs and challenges of servant-leadership. The breadth of their expertise and the cross-cultural perspectives promise to make this a learningful day, also celebrating the official opening of the Servant-Leadership Centre for Research and Education (SLCRE), Chair of the VU Executive Board.

Kind regards, and success with your PhD study,

    Emily,
What qualifications are you looking for in a subject for your dissertation?
I wish you well. I was once a poor, miserable, mistreated graduate student.
I feel for all of you. You have a great topic for your dissertation.

    Sincerely,
    Emily Lean

    Buck,
I am mainly looking for someone who has experience or academic interest in spiritual leadership. My line of questioning would be on how you perceive what a spiritual leader is and what they do. Hope that helps.

    Thanks,
    Emily

    Emily,
What qualifications are you looking for in a subject for your dissertation?
I wish you well. I was once a poor, miserable, mistreated graduate student.
I feel for all of you. You have a great topic for your dissertation.
