Hello, my name is Steven Lucero, and I am a clinical psychology Ph.D. student finishing up my dissertation on using religious/spiritual coping to deal with job insecurity and the subsequent outcomes. A peripheral part of my dissertation is looking at how people who sanctify their jobs to a greater or lesser extent feel more or less committed to and supported by their organization and implications for health and psychological distress. I found that when organizational commitment (or support) is low, higher levels of sanctification are connected with worse adjustment (worse health, more psychological distress). However, sanctification appears to have no effect at higher levels of organizational commitment (or support). The best idea I've come up with to explain this is cognitive dissonance: that people who sanctify their jobs and don't feel committed to it experience distress because of holding those two conflicting beliefs. I'm wondering if there is any sort of I/O, business, or management theory that would more specifically fit with this finding? Thanks for any ideas you are willing to share!
