Metta McGarvey and I are proposing a caucus on Ethical Leadership and Contemplation. Metta is new to MSR and the Academy, and will be developing and directing an Academy for Contemplative and Ethical Leadership at Mind & Life, the organization that has sponsored a series of dialogues with the Dalai Lama on science, the mind, and related topics which have led to a series of facsinating books.

We need three more sponsors. You are not committing to attend; this is not counted in the rule of 3+3, and your name doesn't go into the program; this is a step that shows the academy that people are interested in such a caucus taking place. If you are willing to be listed in our submission, please send your name, affiliation, and email address to us (not the list-serve): Metta McGarvey <mkm664@mail.harvard.edu> and Kathryn Goldman Schuyler <kathryn@coherentchange.com>

Here is the short description for the program:
Ethical leadership practice—considering the impact of decisions on individuals, organizations, society, and the environment—depends on multiple factors including an inner moral compass, self-awareness, attunement to others, and care. We’ll discuss ethical leadership, the role contemplation can play in developing ethical leaders, and the resources available in this arena.

This caucus is an opportunity to explore two deep content areas—ethics and contemplation—as they relate to leadership practice and development. The delivery plan is to seed the discussion with a few well-considered questions for reflection at the start of the caucus. These would be contemplated individually through silent reflection and journaling, followed by either a paired or small group discussion of insights. The organizers would then invite topics and issues from the pairs or small groups that would be organized thematically and used as a “menu” of options for deciding how to spend the rest of the time in discussion.
Sample questions for seeding the conversation could include:
    - What does it mean to be an ethical leader?
    - What are some of the most important challenges to acting ethically as leaders, and what might we do to address them?
    - How might moral development be uniquely affected by the challenges of leadership?
    - How might we help leaders hold the tension between demands for profitability and/or productivity with broader ethical concerns?
    - What kinds of support might help leaders keep their moral center clearly in sight, and have it continually inform their decision making and action?
