Cross-cultural diversity is a double-edged sword in nowadays increasingly globalized world. Although diversity has been largely embraced in international management, the lack of understanding of the subtle dilemmas that result from the tensions between different value orientations (cultures) may pose considerable challenges for effective international management. Being aware of and understanding the underlying value orientations across cultures and management styles therefore is critical for the networked economy.
Based on the theory and practices of international management theory and social network, the track 07_08 “The Implications of Cultural Practices for Global Business and Management” (International Management, Strategic Interest Group (SIG) 07) invites you and your colleagues to submit papers on related topics to explore dilemmas and compare the value orientations across cultures in international management and social networking.
Paper Topics
We welcome all contributions that unveil and study cross-cultural management issues in international management and social networking. The suggested topics are, but not limited to:
1. Chinese "Guanxi" (关系) and “Renqing” (人情) in interpersonal relations and their roles on international collaboration
For instance, what are the social, political, and historical backgrounds of Chinese Guanxi/ Renqing? What are the patterns of Chinese social networking? How do the traditional Chinese social norms and values influence social networking in East-East and/or East-West collaborations and communications? What cultural dilemmas are at stake and what are their implications for international management?
2. The role of "Wasta" in social networking and cooperation in the Arab world
What are the underlying values of “Wasta”? How do we compare it with other (contrasting) networking styles? What dilemmas and challenges it brings to cross-cultural management?
3. Social networking between the East and the West
What are the social networking differences between the East and the West? What are the underlying value orientations? How do we better deal with the cultural differences for more effective international management?
4. Cross-cultural collaboration
What are the emerging dilemmas in cross-cultural collaboration and communication? How to identify these issues and how to deal with them? How do we manage perceived stereotypes in cross-cultural collaborations?
