Purposeful Teaching:  Responding the Changing Needs of Our Students

In professional development workshops at AOM in Vancouver, we learned that dozens of academics are creating courses that respond to a hunger among emerging adults for deeper connections to values, meaning and purpose. Though we take many different approaches, most of us would agree with David Brooks that "for many decades, colleges narrowed down to focus on professional academic disciplines, but now there are a series of forces leading them to widen out so that they leave a mark on the full human being. The trick is to find a way to talk about moral and spiritual things while respecting

diversity." (NY Times, October 6, 2015).

Purposes of the Survey:  Building a community of scholars would be a vital first step in taking our passion into the main stream. Further, we need to identify best practices – what's resonating with students -- and explore some ways to measure impact. This instrument is a first attempt to give shape to the community of scholars, to survey innovative approaches, and to explore means to measure impact.

We are asking you to take part in this survey because you participate in the AOM MSR list serve which indicates a possible interest.

Please respond to 10 questions which should take no more than 10 minutes. Each question offers multiple responses and an option marked "other." Additional thoughts are most welcome! If you have already taken part in the survey – thank you! Your responses have been recorded.

Start Survey in Qualtrics (https://waltonuark.az1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_5nkK8xCBZyENC1n).  Please respond by March 30.

Also, please send your syllabus and/or other public domain documents describing your course to dharris@walton.uark.edu. We will match those documents to your survey responses for purposes of our analysis, but your survey responses will not be connected to your syllabus in any identifiable way in

    research results.

Participation is entirely voluntary and refusing to participate will not adversely affect any other relationship with the University or the researchers.
