Dear MSR and MED-members
If you are curious to learn what a Sustainability Mindset looks like, and how it can be developed, we have a session for you.
While some businesses are championing the message that profit and stewardship of the planet can and must go together, the world is large and many leaders are still arguing that profit is a priority before caring for sustainability. On the other hand, every day is showing the increasing impact that climate change and social issues have on our life, communities and business included. Higher education is thus realizing the key role of educators in preparing students to be sustainability minded leaders. But how? Research has indicated that being a sustainability advocate depends only partially on information and data, while other aspects of the thinking (how we think) and the being (our values and purpose) become essential. In 2014 LEAP!, an experimental learning community of academics interested in the sustainability mindset was formed, with the goal of leveraging resources, expanding awareness, accelerating change and partnering in their learning. In 2015 this "collaboratory" became a UN PRME Working Group on the Sustainability Mindset. This virtual laboratory includes faculty and scholars from 16 countries, and members from Indonesia, India, Philippines, France, Brazil, Nigeria, and the USA are ready to share how they have been developing the Sustainability Mindset with their students. In a face to face storytelling session and via video, they will share examples of the most powerful activities and exercises used with students and their impact; examples of a project that students engaged with in their communities to make a difference and stories of a transformational experience of their own or a student's mindset. In this PDW participants will have a chance to learn, exchange ideas, and work in small groups to identify ways to adapt and incorporate many of the exercises into their own courses.
