    Necessary Conversations Global Research Forum – Organizing as if Humans Matter

    The Humanistic Management Association (HMA) invites interested scholars and practitioners to participate in the "Necessary Conversations" research forum. The forum focuses on ideas related to organizational practices that foster and promote human dignity and well-being in organizations and among societal stakeholders. The forum is facilitated every 1-2 months via global conference call around a topic of mutual interest.

    The next forum topic Necessary Conversations – Organizing as if Humans Matter

    will be on FRIDAY, MAY 19, 12pm-1pm EST.  Dr. Jyoti Bachani will lead a discussion to surface assumptions related to non-profits and implications for organizing. Specifically, this Necessary Conversation will consider how organizations that serve essential human needs – i.e., nonprofits including education, healthcare, child- and elder-care – are marginalized by conventional economic paradigms. Is profit so important that the current economic system values humans as merely paying customers for organizations? Using case studies, Dr. Bachani will discuss the need to shift away from Strategy, Structure, and Systems to focus on Purpose, Profits, and People to show what business can learn from nonprofits. We will also consider how organizing is a social activity that transcends economics.

    Dr. Bachani's (https://www.stmarys-ca.edu/node/143406) work focuses on strategy making in business and nonprofit organizations, management of technology and innovation, mindful use of technology for creating sustainable futures, Humanistic Management, experiential pedagogy, simulations and case-studies.

    Overall, our goal for the Necessary Conversations forum is to:

    o   advance novel research questions and insights about the relationships between management, dignity, and human well-being;

    o   encourage and inspire organizational leadership to generate dignity through their management processes and practices; and,

    o   enliven teaching and learning initiatives in the classroom & inside organizations related to dignity and well-being.

    To join this or future conversations and to propose a forum topic you would like to lead, please email Erica Steckler (erica_steckler@uml.edu) and Olga Jamie (ojaime@fordham.edu) to be added to the Necessary Conversations mailing list and receive call-in logistics. Information can also be found at the Humanistic Management Facebook page: http://on.fb.me/1GJtmvi  We welcome your participation!

    Suggested preparation for Friday, May 19: Please consider how nonprofit organizing is currently understood. What assumptions underlie nonprofit vs. for-profit organizing? How can we transfer lessons from nonprofit organizing to for-profit organizing, and vice versa, to amplify dignity and well-being in organizational activity and interactions?
