The virtue ethics perspective is especially equipped to face this integration challenge because it is premised on the belief that individual human excellence (areté, the Greek word for "virtue", meaning "excellence") goes hand in hand with the excellence of institutions (including firms) and of society as a whole (Moore & Beadle, 2006); a human is thus ethical (or not) as a person in all his or her roles. We would therefore like to work towards realizing the full potential of this ethical, socioeconomic, organizational and political tradition of thought with more than 2000 years of history. The workshop begins with a general introduction to virtue ethics followed by interaction to clarify definitional issues and challenges. Next come three brief presentations focusing on the state of the art of virtue ethics in business applied to and bridging the domains of research, teaching and business engagement. These are followed by moderated roundtables that explore ways to bridge the gaps between research, teaching and practice. The workshop ends with the development of a vision to take the community forward through concrete projects such as grants and special issues. The PDW will be followed by the launch of the "Springer Handbook on Virtue Ethics in Business and Management". | | Search Terms: Virtue Ethics | Research | Teaching

This PDW is an expression of this vision and the 2017 AOM Annual Meeting theme "At the Interface" by gathering thought leading scholars across management disciplines to share ideas and provocations about how organizations and organizational members can become part of the solution to the social, environmental, political, and economic crises facing humanity today. A humanistic perspective of management (Pirson & Turnbull, 2011; Pirson & Lawrence, 2010; Spitzeck, Pirson, Amann, Khan, & Kimakowitz, 2009) involves developing new and impactful insights to manage well-being at the interface of purpose, value, functions, and practices of business in interaction with a range of stakeholders and the planet itself. The goal of this workshop is to generate solution-building paradigmatic bridges by engaging interdisciplinary conversation and strengthening ongoing cross- disciplinary work related to a diversity of ideas, including: dignity, wisdom, sustainability, positive organizational scholarship, transformational leadership, spirituality, Eastern philosophy, mindfulness, authenticity, compassion, caring, ethics, behavioral governance, social responsibility, benevolence, democracy, human capital, and organizational change. Inspired by resources spanning from current organizing theories and practices to ancient spiritual traditions and philosophies, this PDW is designed to seed and propagate dialog, research initiatives, and teaching efficacy linked to eliciting, leveraging, and amplifying humanistic practices in organizing. Introductory remarks by thought leading panelists, followed by audience rotations among facilitated roundtable discussions, will provoke novel thinking, energize problem-solving, advance scholarship, and support teaching across AOM divisions for the well-being and betterment of humanity. | | Search Terms: Wisdom | Consciousness | Humanistic Management

Walsh, U. of Michigan, Ann Arbor | | In accord with the 2017 Academy of Management (AOM) theme – At the Interface – this Professional Development Workshop (PDW) proposes to discuss and debate 'interstitial openings' driven by emerging connectedness of businesses in society with various stakeholders and systems. AOM scholars interested in different aspects of businesses acting in society (e.g., SIM, ONE, MSR, CMS, PTC) will tackle the question: What are the (future) distinctive competencies of business in society scholarship 'at the interface' in a world of both collapsing boundaries and increasing connectedness in enterprises and in our own world of research? The question will highlight the ways in which scholars investigating business in society issues, including responsible practice, ecological impacts, spirituality at work, and critique of the system potentially combined with each other. This PDW proposal brings together a number of scholars with interests in all of these areas to help frame these questions: Jegoo Lee (current states of business in society research), Sandra Waddock (business in society across AOM), Jim Walsh (business in society as the soul of AOM), Dawn Elm (business in society's distinctive missions), Don Siegel (focusing on the micro level), Irene Henriques (business in society research spillover), Michael Barnett (societal outcomes), Jamie Hendry (sustainability as systems thinking), Paul Adler (political-economy and business in society), Kathryn Goldman-Schuyler (action research on healthy organizations), and Laura Albareda (value creation). This workshop comprises a working conversation on moving the field forward. | | And this concludes the PDW tour, time for the MSR Business Meeting and Social - Saturday evening!
