Hello MSR List-Serv - I wonder if we could collectively brainstorm around meaningful possibilities for the MSR Professional Development Workshop 2018 program. Some thought starters that might trigger some creative exchange:

    • Where is your 'learning edge'?
    • As a scholar/teacher/practitioner - what do you wish you knew more about
    • What do you want to learn to do?
My intention is to inspire a generative conversation that might:
    • Identify topics that are meaningful to our membership, and/or
    • Connect people who might work together

Please take a minute or two to kick off and/or contribute to this conversation.
    Thanks!

    What great questions Stacie!

I would say that my learning edge right now is on the role that consciousness plays in transformation at any level: individual, team, organizational, societal.  What kind of individual and collective practices, skills, and approaches can be utilized to raise the overall level of consciousness while still maintaining, as Robert Ouimet says, a "climate of freedom."

    Hi Stacie

    Great questions.

    Where is your 'learning edge'?
My learning edge is how to engage the unconscious and emotions more effectively in the classroom and in research. I have this question because recent neuroscience holds decisions are first made unconsciously related to our emotions and body (referred to as somatic markers) this is followed by a signal that is sent to our conscious mind where we say Ahh! I made the decision. In fact we didn't consciously or deliberately make the decision. Some neuroscientists say the conscious mind is the servant of the unconscious mind. Parallel to this research psychology is finding that  cognitive insight is preceded by transformation at the unconscious level. In Daoist thinking emotions and the unconscious are pathways to body, emotion, mind spiritual development.
  • As a scholar/teacher/practitioner - what do you wish you knew more about
  • What do you want to learn to do?
  • I think the learning edge I have holds the opportunity for transformation and learning for my research, teaching and practice.

    Hi Stacie,

    Thanks for asking!
    • Where is your 'learning edge'?

I am writing a book that articulates the spiritual basis, nature, and condition of organizations (from religious and spiritual perspectives) then integrates research-based psychological/management/organizational development concepts for improving that condition.

So..., as a writer and a person who needs to market my business, I am working on communicating spiritual and religiously-based ideas (i.e., compassion, discernment, etc.) to leaders of faith-based and purpose-driven organizations who aren't used to this language being associated with organizations/organizational effectiveness.

    • As a scholar/teacher/practitioner - what do you wish you knew more about

As a practitioner - How to interest clients in being oriented toward excellence and the emotional/spiritual well-being of their staff members and residents over and above compliance with regulations and the near-term bottom-line. (My industry focus is elder care.)

    • What do you want to learn to do?
To be a better listener and to stay centered in my heart.

I'll be interested to hear what you come up with!

    Hello, Staice

My "learning edge" is currently situated along three research threads:

    a) Vocation as calling. What are the implications to an organization where employees are fully aware of, not only their professional capabilities, but also of a transcendent summons affecting their worldview? What can an organization do to facilitate calling as an element of how "work" is defined and enacted? How does calling serve as a spiritual road map for the person (fulfillment), the organization (performance) and the community (service)?

    b) Organizational conscience as competitive advantage. Other than just a moral compass, how can organizational conscience also become a source of competitive advantage, especially in a globalized environment?

    c) Dimension of a spiritual culture. If Hofstede is able to characterize and contrast cultures within 5 dimensions, I'm exploring if a comparable approach is possible for viewing a "spiritual culture" in the workplace. What could be defined as "the spiritual cultural dimensions" of an organization that would allow a for maturation of spiritual values in the workplace?

    Hope this helps.

    Hi, Stacie and MSR colleagues!

What I'm learning to do now is improving how I'm teaching my working MBA students to be effective change agents in promoting more humanistic workplaces. Some of the corporate practices from the West have, through the past few decades, powerfully influenced Filipino workplace practices.  Even though we are a traditionally communitarian and caring society, our workplaces have become more impersonal and instrumental, leading to high stress levels and loss of purpose among workers.

On a personal citizen and "public advocate" level, I'm trying to promote peaceful conversations among highly polarized groups in our country so that we can slowly move away from the deep political divisions we continue to face after the last elections.  It's a struggle because even some of those in the religious and spiritual work fields are resistant to enter into dialogues that can facilitate more agreeable differences.   We are a predominantly Catholic country and yet, it seems to me, the "Peace be with you" we offer during mass is, after the mass, reserved for those we politically agree with.

I think these are topics that MSR can contribute to.

    Regards,

    Ben
