The Dalai Lama plans Europe visit to spread the sustainability message
His Holiness the Dalai Lama will make a public appearance in Brussels, coinciding with the launch of a major new title

On 11 September the Dalai Lama will visit Brussels in a bid to inspire greater individual engagement and global responsibility on sustainability issues. Hosted by the Brussels Expo venue, the Dalai Lama will focus on how the world's people can come together to tackle a wide range of pressing humanitarian and environmental issues.

The Dalai Lama's visit will coincide with the launch of major new title, Business as an Instrument for Societal Change: In Conversation with the Dalai Lama. Authored by leading sustainability commentator Sander Tideman, and inspired by conversations with the Dalai Lama and key leaders from the worlds of business, science, government and education, the book presents a framework for the development of a new kind of leadership – one fit for purpose in the face of escalating societal and environmental demands.

In his foreword to the book, the Dalai Lama comments,

"Over recent years I have engaged with business leaders and economists... My friend Sander Tideman, who initiated many of these dialogues... has gathered these conversations together in this book."

Commenting on the need for a new approach to business and leadership, author – Sander Tideman – remarks,

"The dialogues recounted in Business as an Instrument for Societal Change: In Conversation with the Dalai Lama call for greater attention to the purpose of organizations and their leaders. Specifically, they call for leaders of business to develop a type of purposeful leadership so that their business will truly create societal, economic, and ecological value. If we want to develop this type of leadership, we will first need to take a step back in time and thoroughly reflect on why we are doing what we do, and whether we are moving in the right direction."

While forthcoming on other humanitarian and environmental issues, the Dalai Lama rarely speaks on the topics of business and leadership. The exchanges outlined in Tideman's upcoming book are a rare insight into the thoughts of the Dalai Lama – and other prominent leaders – on such topics. Inspired by these conversations, Tideman's new multidisciplinary approach incorporates elements of economic, leadership, neuroscience, psychology and strategy disciplines to establish a new paradigm for a more sustainable approach to leadership.

The Dalai Lama's Brussels Expo talk is organised by Mind and Life Europe, a non-profit supporting the development of best practice initiatives within the European community. It is open to all, with tickets available to book at www.dalailama2016.be.

Business as an Instrument for Societal Change: In Conversation with the Dalai Lama is published by Greenleaf Publishing and will be released in August.
