2016 MSR Division Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals
The Management, Spirituality and Religion (MSR) Interest Group cordially invites you to submit a Professional Development Workshop (PDW) proposal for the 76th annual Academy of Management Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California, August 5-9, 2016.
AOM 2016 Annual Meeting Theme and MSR: The 2016 Annual Meeting theme "Making Organizations Meaningful" invites members to consider the flaws of the current economic and managerial setup leading to various crisis of public trust and explore the "meaningfulness of an organization as its expression of purpose, values or worth" beyond the mere economic. From an MSR perspective, this topic is a strong invitation to bring to the conversation more actively the wisdom provided by ancient spiritual and religious traditions on how organizations can become more meaningful. Given the generational shift of expectations as well as the low levels of engagement in traditional organizations, practical wisdom provided by diverse spiritual and religious beliefs, practices and cultures can generate much needed conversations about a new synthesis of business, management and meaningful spiritual engagement. Current trends and the opportunities and challenges they bring forth have clear implications for theory building, research, practice, and teaching. A rich description of the theme is available in the AOM website.
As always, the Annual Meeting of the Academy is an opportunity to share our ideas and research on any topic. Although proposals on all topics are most welcome at MSR, each annual theme offers all of us a possibly rich stimulus and focus for research and ideas we might wish to share. This year the theme of "Making Organizations Meaningful" can be seen as particularly exciting for MSR as it invites us to share research, theory, and ideas about how our deepest spiritual and religious values and perspectives can contribute to imbue organizational life with much richer perspectives on life itself and organizing in specific. We encourage submitters to explore more deeply the notions of meaning and meaningful organizations and propose ideas, research and teaching agendas to empower others to lead more meaningful lives within and without organizations. From this perspective, MSR members can make significant contributions by exploring how MSR and AOM at large can provide insight into better, more ethical, and more engaging ways of organizing at group, organizational and societal levels.
MSR and Cross-Disciplinary PDWs: MSR's primary focus is on understanding the nature, influence, and relationship of spirituality and religion on organizations and their environments. Major areas of investigation include theoretical and empirical exploration of the relationship and relevance of spirituality, religion and faith at work to management, leadership, organizations and society. Potential topics include religious ethics, spirituality and work, spiritual leadership, applications of religious principles to work environments and evaluation studies of the effectiveness business and governance systems and approaches that nurture the human spirit in private, not-for-profit, and public institutions.
The MSR PDW provides the perfect platform to share cross-disciplinary knowledge and expertise in exploratory research and also offers opportunities for personal and professional development. PDWs enhance our exploration of new and innovative constructs, methodologies, pedagogies, and practices, establishing a foundation for future MSR scholarship and application. In that spirit, MSR encourages PDW submissions that are innovative, interdisciplinary, and highly interactive. We encourage you to involve participants from other AOM divisions and to explore connections with the 2016 "Making Organizations Meaningful" conference theme and, of course, other themes associated with your teaching, research, and service.
Indeed, we suggest that MSR has the potential to explore and demonstrate the power of the role the world's spiritual and religious traditions may inform organizational strategy, design, and behavior in many new and creative ways. Therefore, we especially encourage bold, innovative, and risky submissions.
A special note on your submission(s) and the processes of the 2016 Annual PDW program: This year the Academy is eager to continue and to increase its efforts to make the PDW program a vital, exciting, and increasingly interactive adventure for all of us. In your submission, please feel most welcome to add a commentary about how your PDW, if accepted, can be a lively affair for the audience.... and for you.
PLEASE REVIEW THE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES. PDWs NOT COMPLIANT WITH THESE STANDARDS will not be reviewed or evaluated for acceptance. PDWs will occur on Friday, August 5th and Saturday, August 6th. All-Academy Theme PDWs will occur on Sunday, August 7th. We urge you to submit proposals to this highly competitive review process.
