Dear MSR colleagues,
I would like to invite you to the seminar held by the Northumbria University "Meaning and Spirituality At Work" research group on 7 December 2022 at 2pm GMT. (UK).
If you are interested to attend, please email n.burton@northumbria.ac.uk for the TEAMS link
The seminar will be presented by Sally Wightman and details are as follows:
Meaningfulness and tradition in the third sector
Sally will be presenting findings from her PhD thesis which investigates how tradition influences the meaningfulness employees gain from their work, using a comparative case study approach featuring Christian and secular youth homelessness charities in the UK. Recent research has argued that the literature on 'calling' contains a range of interpretations of the concept and this divergence can be understood using Alasdair MacIntyre's notion of tradition-constituted rationality (Wightman, Potts and Beadle, 2022). Through the use of a range of interviews at three youth homelessness charities, each with a different attitude towards tradition in the workplace, the study being presented in this seminar builds on this research by looking at how tradition among other ideas from MacIntyre's moral philosophy such as practices and narrativity apply to the field of meaningful work. In particular, the study considers the temporarily of meaningfulness, power and meaningful work, and the tensions between objective and subjective sources of meaning.
