    Dear MSR Colleagues,

I am writing to let you know that our beloved Ian Mitroff is in hospice. He is in pain and ready to go. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts, prayers, and loving intentions. He made a huge difference to our field, and continued to be involved in MSR as much as he could be these last few years.

May he have ease in all states. May God bless him everywhere he goes and may he stay with us forever in all forms. This reminds me that only transience is permanent. My prayers are for him and the family. I hope we all could stay kind, just, brave, loving and happy 🙏🌸

    Hi Judi and All,

I am thinking and praying peace, love and all other good things for Ian and his family.

...When I was in my MBA, I did an independent reading course, in which I read the works of Ian Mitroff. Then, in the last year or so, I felt so honored and excited to meet Ian through one of the sessions that the two of you organized. I learned that he is not only a brilliant scholar and thought leader, but that he is also a deeply humble, kind and wise person with great generosity of spirit.

    Sincerely,

    Sheldene Simola

    Praying for Ian Mitroff.

I didn't know him personally but have used his work for my doctoral thesis on spirituality.

    Sincerely.

Thank you for sharing this with us Judi. Ian was an inspiration to many of us. We spent some time in silence for him during our recent colloquium. May he and his family know God's peace and comfort in these coming days.

Ian was a good friend and wonderful colleague. I got to know him by working alongside him at my university for a few years, as well as in MSR, where we were in a number of workshops and panels together. Brilliant thinker, kind man, good friend.

It saddens me to know that Prof. Ian is in pain; I pray for relief and peace. I have had the privilege of interacting with him a couple of times at AOM over the years. I visited San Francisco in 2022, he invited me for exchange  of our thoughts over lunch at Ferry building when I learnt about significant work he had been engaged in. I remember his concern for social and environmental issues.

The first year I attended AoM (summer 2021 while it was still virtual), I was drawn to a session on Fred Rogers's values. I don't know how involved I ever would have gotten in AoM and MSR as an interest group and now division if it were not for Ian (and Judi calling me out for hanging in the background in the online session).  May Ian's light shine on.

I visited to meet  Dr.Ian Mitroff in Feb 23, 2000 at the USC to learn about Spirituality in the workplace in the US.  He gave me his book "Smart Thinking for Crazy Times."

He suggested me that Japanese has a unique spirituality  as expressed in "Zen in the Art of Archery" by Eugen Herrigel.  I often referred his name in my articles.  You are always in my mind.    "Spiritual audit in corporate America" is a classic in MSR field and I will read this book with students in the next semester.

    Oh - sad to hear.

I had the chance to meet Mitroff at the University of Southern California back in 2004 - my brother accompanied me to this visit. It was an interesting meeting.

Thank you everyone for your beautiful prayers, memories and kind thoughts. I compiled them and sent them to Donna, Ian's wife, and she read them to Ian. She wrote, " It made him happy to hear such wonderful messages from so many members of the MSR Community. Then we read the messages aloud again when our daughter arrived because he wanted her to hear them."

I would also like you to know that the Flamekeepers Committee voted to have Ian Mitroff as our newest Flamekeeper. I believe that our souls are eternal and that when Ian leaves his body, he will continue to help keep the flame of MSR alive.
